ONE of Newport’s best-loved music venues risks closure unless music fans can raise £10,000 to sound-proof the roof, staff have said.

Owner Samantha Dabb has started a campaign to raise the cash with a number of novel fundraising ideas such as the ability to dedicate a urinal or toilet cubicle.

Le Pub opened in the city 22 years ago and since then has hosted bands ranging from Goldie Lookin’ Chain to British Sea Power, along with many up and coming local artists.

Ms Dabb said: “We are extremely disappointed in finding ourselves in the position where we are having to crowd fund to ensure our venue stays open. But this is where we are at: Le Pub will not remain open unless we are able to soundproof the building and we need to raise £10,000 to do so.”

“We've recently started to receive complaints from the neighbours and it's a problem that isn't just going to go away.”

Pubgoers who want their own plaque above a urinal are out of luck as the four on offer have already been claimed, but they at the time of going to press two toilet cubicles were still available for a bargainous £75.

Other goodies include free entry to gigs for a year, a private party, Le Pub branded glasses and the chance to name your own cocktail which will be on sale.

The pub came top in the regional section of the NME Small Venues Award, and fourth across the entire UK.

A spokeswoman for the council said: “Newport City Council received complaints in relation to Le Pub and subsequently served a noise abatement notice in October 2013. This required the control of noise levels from amplified music to prevent a nuisance being caused to nearby residents.

“Further complaints have recently been received and advice has been provided to ensure that the operators of the premises are fully aware of their responsibilities. It has been made clear that formal action may be taken if complaints continue to be received and an investigation by officers proves that the pub has caused a statutory nuisance, breaching the requirements of the notice.

“It should be noted that the council does not have the power to require a premises to close under statutory nuisance legislation.”

The total raised so far stands at £2,575.
