THE bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion at a Newport supermarket last night.
A Tesco spokesman confirmed that what was initially thought to be a suspicious package was found in the car park of the Tesco in Newport’s Spytty Retail Park last night.
The spokesman said the store was evacuated around 10pm as a precaution and police were in attendance, but said the store was trading as normal soon after the incident.
A Gwent Police spokeswoman said that police were called by the Tesco store at 8.30pm last night after an item was found on the floor near to the store.
“The item was a large plastic bottle with tape around it and was described as having several items inside,” the spokeswoman said.
“The car park was sealed off and Tesco evacuated their store.
“As a precaution the Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit (EOD) were called and they performed a controlled explosion which had been carried out by 10.55pm.”
The EOD said the item was later found not to be dangerous, and was a plastic bottle.
