VOLUNTEERS in Pill collected about 50 bin bags of rubbish on a litter pick there on Tuesday, its organiser said.

Paul Murphy, 42, who has lived in the area for his whole life, arranged it and sought volunteers to help on social media.

He said that the volunteers, who included Christine Thomas from Newport city council and Sam Reed from Newport City Homes, collected about ten bags from around Asda and another ten from the Kwik Save site. They braved rain all day to complete it.

Mr Murphy said: “It was the first one I’ve done and arranged it. People are willing to help and will do it more and more. It was a good day.”

They met at the Pill Millennium Centre on Courtybella Terrace at 11am and underwent a health and safety introduction given by staff from the council. They then tended to Constables Close, removed weeds, and went door knocking to see if they could offer any waste management advice.

After a break for tea and biscuits at the centre, they tided up litter in Pill Park before finishing at about 3pm.
