IT WAS another successful year at the annual Bedwellty Agricultural Show as hundreds turned out to see the fantastic display of agriculture.

Celebrating 140 years, the sun shone down on the show in Blackwood on Saturday.

Visitors travelled from far and wide to view a whole host of agricultural delights from a range of exhibitors.

There was something for everyone at the show with horse jumping, rabbit, sheep, dog and pig competitions.

As well as various shows and displays, including a rabbit and pet show; horse and tracker show; poultry and pigeons, and horticulture.

For the first time this year the Welsh Axemen - who use razor sharp axes to simulate the falling of a tree, and cut it up into lengths - also performed multiple displays.

Show secretary Amy Tamplin, of Machen, said they definitely added to the excitement this time around.

“It is a great day for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

“We have got lots of pets and rabbits for the children to look at and we have got a great livestock station this year with sheep, cows and pigs.

“This is the first time the Welsh Axemen have been at the show and they have been at the Royal Welsh Show.

“We have lots of locals here today, which is really good, and lots of people who have walked in.

“It is great when the rain holds off!”

Oakdale mum Dana Johnson, 35, was at the show with her son Josh Johnson, four, and his friend Lewis Potter, three.

“The last time we were here was four years ago, so it is our first time since then, but it is a great day out for the kids, as the boys love animals,” she said.

“They love horses and have been taking riding lessons- we will definitely come back next year.”

Glyn Davies, livestock secretary was also pleased with the success of the show.

“I have been coming here all of my life,” he said.

“This is the only show of its kind in South Wales that is in the middle of an urban area.

“It is particularly good for the youngsters who come to see the sheep, pigs, and cattle.

“I would say it is the biggest one day show in South Wales.

“Exhibitors have come from all over- lots are from Usk and lots are local or from the Caerphilly county borough.”

Professional rabbit breeder Kerry Gwillym, from Cwmbran, was at the show to display her award-winning rabbits.

Ms Gwillym said she had been competing in the show for the last three years and called it a ‘good family day out.’

“I have brought five rabbits to this year’s show,” she said.

“Those include the Baby Vienna Rabbit which is a rare breed, and two of my Himalayan rabbits.

“It is a lovely day everyone is really friendly.

“There is s lot going on here and shows are ideal places for people to buy animals.”

Also on display at the show were an impressive variety of dogs.

Six-year-old horse rider Aneira Hughes was hoping her Chihuahua Snowflake would win ‘best puppy’

Proud mum Natalie Hughes, of Cefn Hengoed, said: “The puppies are only twelve weeks old.

“This is their first outing and we are hoping to win ‘Best Puppy’ this is the first time we have done this.

“We come every year and it is a great day out.”
