FISHERMEN keeping an ancient Monmouthshire tradition alive will hold an open day on Saturday.
The Black Rock fishermen will hold the open day at the Black Rock picnic site in Portskewett from 1pm until 5pm.
There will be a display, exhibition and film of the group’s lave net fishing technique, which they use to catch salmon and other fish in the Severn Estuary.
The Y-shaped lave net is made with willow that holds a loosely hung net. The handle of the net, the rock staff, is made of ash or willow and arms are kept in position while fishing with a spreader, called the headboard.
The group’s secretary, Martin Morgan, said: “The season has been very busy with plenty of settled weather and good fishing.”
Members will also receive prizes for fishing landmarks this year. The Bob Leonard Cup will be presented to a fisherman who caught their first salmon this year, Chris Hourihane, and the Doug Brown Cup will be awarded to the fisherman who caught the biggest salmon.
The Sudbrook History Group will also hold their own display at the open day.
