COMMEMORATIONS were held across Newport and across Wales recently to mark the start of the First World War.

Many gathered at the Civic Centre to pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. I also attended the unveiling of the red dragon memorial in Langemark, Flanders last weekend, and it was an honour to be at this special and poignant event.

Similar commemoration events will be held over the coming months and indeed years, and I encourage you to take part.

A few weeks ago I attended the National Play Day held at Tredegar Park. It was great to see so many children and parents taking part in a wide range of events. Newport City Council has many exciting activities scheduled over the rest of the summer that will keep the children entertained! For more information visit newport.gov.uk or call 01633 656656.

I was delighted to open the newly-located Newport Post Office last week. Located in the Kingsway Centre, the branch is bright and modern, and has seven service counters.

There are three self-service machines, and two private consultation rooms where customers can discuss financial products and speak with specialist staff. The branch is easily accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs, and I hope that you will continue to use this important service.

I will be holding an information event in Rhiwderin Village Hall on September 12 from 10am until 12pm. For further details contact 01633 222523.
