FOUR Newport men were jailed yesterday for a total of five years for their part in a conspiracy to flood the streets with thousands of pounds worth of amphetamine.

Appearing for sentence at Cardiff Crown Court, brothers Jamie Walsh, 25, and David Walsh, 26, both of Vaughan Williams Drive, had previously admitted in June this year conspiracy to supply the drug on May 24, 2013, while Robert Bevan, 61, of Elgar Circle, previously admitted conspiracy to supply amphetamine, possession of amphetamine with intent to supply, and possession of cannabis on August 18. The fourth man, Anthony O’Flaherty, 26, of Ladyhill Court, previously admitted assisting an offender on July 18.

The offences date back to May 24 last year when police stumbled across what prosecutor Tony Trigg described as a drug dealing enterprise at a house on Walford Davies Drive in Newport.

The men were all arrested. Later, on January 4 this year Bevan was arrested again at his home on Elgar Circle when police found 1.33kg of dry amphetamine in his freezer - worth between £8,000 and £16,000 - as well as a quantity of cannabis.

Judge Greg Bull sentenced the Walsh brothers to two years jail each; Bevan, for whom this is his first conviction, to 18 months for conspiracy and 12 months consecutive for possession with intent to supply, plus absolute discharge for the cannabis possession; and O’Flaherty eight months’ jail.

The Walsh brothers and Bevan must pay £120 victim surcharges and O’Flaherty must pay £100.
