THE WHITE House has confirmed US President Barack Obama will visit a Welsh school on Thursday morning as part of his trip to Newport for the Nato Summit - with a strong chance it will be a Gwent school.

President Obama's itinerary says that he will arrive in Newport from Estonia on Wednesday night. The following morning he will visit a Welsh school with Prime Minister David Cameron, where they will meet students.

He is then due at the Celtic Manor in afternoon, where he will participate in an official photo with the 150 other leaders and ministers attending the NATO Summit at the Celtic Manor Resort.

He will then join NATO leaders for the first session which will be on Afghanistan. Following that session, they will hold a meeting of the Nato-Ukraine Commission. And at the end of the day there will be a working dinner on security challenges at the historic Cardiff Castle.

For the last day of his trip on Friday September 5 the President will view a fly-over ceremony. He will then participate in working sessions with other NATO leaders, before holding a press conference and then leaving Wales for Washington.

With the itinerary stating he will stay overnight in Newport, and the fact he has several meetings to attend in the city on Thursday, it would appear there is a strong chance that school will be in Newport.

President Obama is the first serving US president to visit Wales.

The NATO Summit will be held on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 September and will host more than 150 heads of state and ministers. Security for the summit will be provided by 9,500 police officers drawn from 43 UK police forces with 12 miles of security fencing already in place at keys sites in Cardiff and Newport.
