A NEWPORT headteacher who battled cancer is on track to raise £4,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support by cycling over six mountains in three days.

Jonathan Wilson, who has been headteacher at Duffryn High School for 11 years, is taking on the Alps challenge with a team of 30 cyclists.

He will be flying to Switzerland today before the demanding cycle challenge across the mountain range begins tomorrow.

Mr Wilson was diagnosed with Lymphoma in 2007 and was off work for more than a year while he battled the disease at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

He said: "I was very lucky to survive it. I'm doing this challenge because of my own experience and to give something back.

"A couple of years ago I did a stage of the Tour de France for charity and this year, I'm going to do the Alps. We're cycling up and down six mountains, two mountains a day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

"The biggest one is Col du Galibier, which is three times the height of Mount Snowdon. I do lots of cycling but this is 100km a day for three days. The training has gone well, I'm the lightest I've been in 20 years.

"I'm doing it with a team of people run by Macmillan in London, I haven't met a lot of them. There's about 30 people and we're all meeting at Geneva airport.

"I'm looking forward to it with trepidation. If anybody would like to donate it'd be gratefully received."

Mr Wilson has already raised nearly £4,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
