A GWENT man appeared in Newport Crown Court yesterday accused of causing the death by dangerous driving of a popular young footballer.

Jason Lewis, of Darenfelin, Llanelly Hill, is accused of one count of causing death by dangerous driving, and one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving to Rosalind Webb, 66.

The charges follow a crash on Waun-y-Pound Road, Ebbw Vale, near the former Coleg Gwent site, on November 30 last year.

Lewis, 23, will appear at Newport Crown Court again on November 21 for a plea and case management hearing. He was released on unconditional bail.

A candlelit vigil was attended by about 100 people for Tom Baynton, 21, of Gilwern, near Abergavenny, two days after he died in the crash.

Four others were injured in the incident. And more than 3,000 people have subscribed to a Facebook page commemorating the former Brynmawr Comprehensive School pupil’s life and important dates, like his 23rd birthday in August, are still celebrated on it.

Flowers, including yellow roses, were left near the crash site at Cemetery Corner roundabout after he died.

A friend, Anthony Carrington, wrote of the Gilwern and District FC player on Facebook: “I will certainly miss your cheeky chops especially in the dressing room on a Saturday.

“Always a star and you will continue to be a star shining on those who loved you. Good night God bless.”

A Llanfoist AFC home match against Clydach AFC was cancelled as a mark of respect to Mr Baynton.

Other messages said he was “one of a kind” and one friend said he had been like a brother.

“For the best part of ten years we have laughed so much together, done so many things together and have had so many amazing and funny memories that you could just never put a price on,” one message said.

“Life will not be the same without you bro.”

Monmouthshire councillor Simon Howarth, member for Llanelly Hill, said after the crash that Mr Baynton’s family were well respected in the local area and his father, Bobby, who is heavily involved with football in Clydach, had been “totally devastated” by the crash.
