AROUND 700 people descended on Fourteen Locks Canal Centre on Sunday to remember the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One.

Youngsters from across Gwent came to learn about the historic date, with more than £600 raised for Help for Heroes Fund.

Diana McCrea, co-ordinator for Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen Help for Heroes said: "What a day! Thank you so much to guests, staff and volunteers at Fourteen Locks for making Heritage Day such a success!”

Tom Maloney, from Fourteen Locks centre, added: “It was an opportunity for the community to come together and was a fantastic success.”

On the day children could see military vehicles, take a boat trip on the canal and ride a steam engine as well as look at stalls.

All events were free thanks to help from Newport City Homes.

Mr Maloney also thanked deputy mayor and mayoress cllr David Atwell and Carole Atwell, the Allegra Ladies Choir, Newport Cycle Hire, Green Goddess Cwmbran Veterens, Rogerstone Scouts, the City of Newport Model Engineering Society, Risca Choir, Christine Davies, Newport Library, David Miller, Gwent Police and everyone else who supported the Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust and Fourteen Locks Canal Centre.
