CROWDS of football fans turned out at a Newport pub on Friday for a chance to pose with the Premier League trophy.

The George pub in Maindee welcomed the prestigious piece of silverware, along with the Capital One Cup, on Friday evening.

Billy McKeen, licensee of The George pub with his wife Michele, said more than 60 people turned up to have their photographs taken with the pair of trophies.

The two cups came to the pub, on Chepstow Road, thanks to the Manchester City Supporters Club area branch manager for South Wales David Gibson.

Because Manchester City won both last season’s Premier League and Capital One Cup competition Mr Gibson was able to send the two cups to a chosen South Wales pub.

Mr McKeen said: “It went well. Every time Manchester City wins the cup our pub gets chosen to host an evening with it. It is good for business as well.” Mark Davis, DJ at The George, said: “It was not just Man City fans who came along, but random football supporters attended as well. It’s because it’s the Premier League, it’s big.”

The cups were on full show on two plinths

. Some people tried to pick up and touch the cups but they weren’t allowed, security was there to stop them.”

“The next day it was everywhere, pictures on Facebook and social media of people posing next to the cups. It was a nice display.”

This is the second time the Premier League has come to The George. It also visited when Manchester City were crowned champions two years ago.
