THE ARGUS is once again on the look out for the best young artist in Gwent.

This is the fourth year of our annual competition and we want it to be better than ever.

To that end we have attracted new partners in Western Power Distribution, who are kindly sponsoring this year’s event, and in Project Space the new gallery in the heart of Newport, which will display shortlisted artworks this year.

In addition, Project Space will run two art workshops in November to help contestants perfect their art techniques.

And the University of South Wales will offer this year’s overall winner the chance to attend an art masterclass at the university.

As well as giving young artists the chance to showcase their talents, the competition provides the chance to win some generous cash prizes.

Argus deputy editor, Nicole Garnon, who has organised the competition since it first started, said: “This annual art competition is a real treat.

“The standard of art work never ceases to amaze us.”

All you have to do to take part is submit an original piece of art, be it a drawing, painting, sculpture or whatever to the address on the entry form. The closing date for entries is December 12, 2014.

Our judging panel consisting of representatives from the University, South Wales Argus and Western Power, will meet during the following weeks to select a shortlist of works which will be displayed at Project Space on Commercial Street, Newport from January 8, 2015 until January 31.

There are three age categories. Eight years old and under, nine to 12 years and 13 to 18 years. There will be a winner and runner-up in each age category and then an overall winner, who will be named the South Wales Argus young Gwent Artist of the Year.

Winners of the age groups will each receive £75; runners-up £25 and £175 for their school’s art department.

The overall winner will win a trophy plus a cheque for £400. Their school will receive £175 for the art department. They will also receive an art masterclass at the University of South Wales.
