HERE is your chance to pass Go, collect £200 of goodies – and be crowned Newport’s first Monopoly champion.

Following the launch of the official Monopoly Newport Edition last week, the first ever Newport Monopoly Championships will be held at Newport Market on Thursday October 30.

Anyone aged eight or over is eligible to play on the new board and Dan Taylor, from Winning Moves UK, said that schools are encouraged to enter.

The new board showcases 22 city landmarks – including Celtic Manor Resort and the Transporter Bridge – which replace the likes of Mayfair and Park Lane from the original London Monopoly board.

The Argus has been chosen for the coveted Fleet Street square, with game makers declaring the decision a “no-brainer” because of the famous London street’s long association with the newspaper industry.

Local charities, including Age Cymru Gwent and The Ieuan the Lion Memorial Fund, set up in memory of Newport boy Ieuan Yendle who died aged 13 after a brave fight with an undiagnosed illness, also appear in the game.

Other landmarks to make it onto the board, from a much larger initial list, include: Tredegar House and Park, University of South Wales, Coleg Gwent, Caerleon Comprehensive School, West Usk Lighthouse, Newport Centre, Riverfront Theatre, Newport Retail Park, Friars Walk, Newport Market, Kingsway Centre, The 2010 Ryder Cup Course, Newport Gwent Dragons, Newport County AFC, Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport Cathedral, Newport Castle, Roman Amphitheatre Caerleon, Newport Transporter Bridge and Monmouthshire Building Society.

Newport bus station and train station, Newport docks and taxi rank also feature as part of the board’s customised travel theme.

Among the £200 worth of goodies for the winner of the championships are a signed copy of the brand new board, as well as prizes courtesy of Celtic Manor Resort, the newly crowned ‘Mayfair of the City’.

Entries close at midnight on Sunday, October 26.

The Monopoly Newport Edition is available from shops, including Waitrose, Waterstones, WH Smith, and The Works at £24.99. It is also available online at www.amazon.co.uk.
