PUPILS at Caerleon Comprehensive School have created gigantic poppies to commemorate those who died in the First World War.

Pupils from year seven to year 13 joined together to create 39 huge poppies to mark the centenary of the beginning of the war.

After being inspired by the poppies that surround the Tower of London, which on Armistice Day, will reach a total of 888,246 to mark each British and colonial death during the war, pupils decided to create the poppies to respect the 39 soldiers from Caerleon who lost their lives during this time.

Art teacher Sarah Deasy said: “We always hold a remembrance ceremony each year at the school, but to mark the centenary this year, we wanted to do something really special.

“We just thought that the poppies would look really amazing and have a great visual impact.”

The poppies are approximately one metre wide and one metre in height and are made from recycled cardboard and then covered paper mache and painted red green and black. All of the poppies will be on display hanging from the school hall ceiling from November 1 and staff at the school are inviting those who wish to view them to contact Caerleon Comprehensive School on 01633 420106.
