NEWPORT council has extended a deadline for residents to voice their opinions on forthcoming budget cuts.

The council has already cut £50 million with a further £25 million savings identified over the next three financial years.

The Argus reported in June that councils across the country could face a grant reduction from the Welsh Government of 4.5 per cent next year, a much greater figure than the 1.5 per cent previously proposed.

Officers have been working towards a four per cent reduction which could mean council would need to find a further £8 million savings for 2015-16.

Residents have been invited to fill in a questionnaire to show which services matter most, how they think the council can do things differently to save money and how the community could get more involved.

The deadline for questionnaire responses has now been extended until November 14.

Chris Evans, councillor for Rogerstone, said: “We asked for maximum amount of budget consultation forms in Rogerstone, which we delivered to residents groups, and local gathering points.

“Locals seemed really keen to take part, however, some residents did comment on the short deadline, which I fed back. Newport council listened, and I'm delighted the deadline has been extended.

“It’s so important residents have their say on the services they value before decisions are made. I would urge everyone to fill in the forms either hard copies or online.”

A public consultation on the full budget proposals for the next financial year will start in December 2014 and end in January 2015.
