AN ARMY regiment is aiming to complete a week-long abseil in Cwmbran this week as part of a fundraising attempt to descend the height of Mount Everest.

The 104th Regiment of the Royal Artillery is abseiling down Gwent House in Gwent Square, Cwmbran everyday this week until Saturday.

The team are hoping to do a minimum of 70 abseils a day in a bid to complete the distance of the world’s highest mountain, Everest in Asia, at 8,848 metres.

Sarah Telford, who works at QualitySolicitors Rubin Lewis O’Brien, also successfully took part in the feat yesterday as part of her training for entry into the RAF this year.

The regiment is aiming to raise £4,000 for children’s hospice Ty Hafan and the Royal Artillery Trust.

Lieutenant Kit Scouller, a member of the 104th Regiment based in Newport, said: “After day one we have raised £500. “

Adding: “We did 94 abseils on Monday and we are always looking for volunteers from the public so they can get to know more about their local artillery regiment.”

The team will be in Gwent Square until Saturday with fundraising buckets hoping to raise more.
