Detective Chief Superintendent for Gwent Police William Davies, who is the senior investigating officer, told the inquest Miss Yemm was found on the floor of one of the rooms at the Sirhowy Arms.
He added: "In the room with Cerys was a male identified as Matthew Williams. "He was arrested an detained but died a short time later."
He said a post mortem examination was carried out by pathologist Dr Richard Jones and that "provisional findings" showed Miss Yemm had died as a result of "sharp force trauma to the face and neck".

THE inquest into the death of Cerys Yemm heard she died as a result of "sharp force trauma to the face and neck".
The inquest into Miss Yemm's death was opened and adjourned this morning at Gwent Coroner's Court, sitting in Newport.
Gwent chief coroner David Bowen said her body would be released to her family for funeral purposes and adjourned the inquest until April 3, 2015.

THE inquest into the death of of Blackwood woman Cerys Marie Yemm will be opened today.
The 22-year-old was found dead at the Sirhowy Arms hostel in Argoed, on Thursday 6 November.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the case as police officers discharged a taser at her attacker Matthew Williams who later died.
The inquest will take place at Newport Civic Centre.
