A NEWPORT nursery has received a good Estyn report following its first inspection.

Celtic Springs Nursery, in Spooner Close, is one of three day nurseries attached to St John’s on the Hill School in Chepstow.

The nursery, which caters for 35 pre-school children, feeds up to six different primary schools across Gwent.

Nursery manager Charlene Durston, who has been in the post since January this year, said: “It was the first Estyn inspection for the nursery, we’ve only been council-funded for eight terms.

“It was also my first inspection as manager, it was a bit daunting but as a team, we put in a lot of hard work. It’s also down to the children themselves.”

Reporting inspector Mary Dyas found that the current performance of the nursery is good overall as nearly all children make good progress, teaching and leadership is good, practitioners provide good support, treat children with respect and provide a range of interesting experiences.

Ms Dyas also found the nursery’s prospects for improvement to be good as “strong leadership from the manager provides a clear sense of purpose and direction”, practitioners work well together as a team and self-evaluation has successfully identified appropriate areas for development.

Recommendations for the nursery included providing parents with information about their children’s next steps, providing more opportunities for children to interact with the community through visits and visitors and further develop the outdoor area.

The nursery will now draw up an action plan that shows how it is going to address the recommendations.
