SOMETIMES even the most experienced newspaper journalist is surprised by the way in which an unlikely story captures the imagination of the public.

The tale of Cheeky the donkey is a case in point.

Regular readers will remember how Cheeky, who has lived at Greenmeadow Community Farm since 2006, was the victim of some particularly senseless violence earlier this month.

The 22-year-old donkey was stabbed 12 times in her stable by someone with a penknife.

It was a horrible attack on a defenceless animal who has brought much joy to many thousands of children visiting the farm over a number of years.

The attacker is yet to be caught, but the reaction to Cheeky has been phenomenal.

The community farm has received messages of support from as far afield as Australia and the United States.

Many of our readers have asked what they can do to help, and their donations will be used to help cover vets’ bills.

Meanwhile, local companies have come forward to offer everything from carrots, to free increased security at the farm, to special ointments for Cheeky’s wounds.

It is heart-warming stuff.

Thankfully, Cheeky is now recovering well from her ordeal and will be one of the farm’s star attractions during the Christmas period.
