Father Christmas, reindeers, elves, lots of snow and a heart-warming message to boot. What more could anyone ask for this Christmas?
Miracle on 34th Street is a complicated musical to stage, there are numerous set and costume changes and the storyline necessitates a large cast which needs to be regimentally rehearsed.
This production by The New Venture Players took on the challenge – and triumphantly rose above it.
In the capable hands of Gordon Collins, Becky Philips, Ben Hurley and Cathy Metcalf, the timeless story of goodwill and kindness overcoming cynicism and consumerism was successfully transferred to the Newport stage, and there were some stand-out performances to boot.
Taryn Meyrick was a revelation as little Susan Walker giving an angelic, confident and eager performance (special mention also to Darcy Rees who takes on the role on alternate days).
The combined talent and experience of Georgia Tasker-Davies (Doris Walker) and Ben Hurley (Fred Bailey) shone, whilst Rebecca Evans was magnificently focused as store manager Ms Macy.
There was a fantastic twinkle in Mark Cooper (Kris Kringle’s) eye throughout, and there can be no greater compliment than that there can be absolutely no doubt that he is the real Santa Claus.
A real festive treat – you have until Saturday to catch up with it.
