THERE are some hugely talented young people reading the Argus, if the response to our annual Gwent Young Artist of the Year contest is anything to go by.

We have received some wonderful pieces of art, including paintings and sculptures, for this year’s competition.

The standard of entry seems to improve with every passing year.

Entries are now closed and the judging panel face a daunting task when they meet to choose a winner during the first week of next month.

Our competition is now in its fourth year, with Western Power Distribution sponsoring this year’s contest.

Our sponsors will form part of the judging panel, along with representatives from the University of South Wales, Project Space and the Argus.

There will no doubt be some tough discussions ahead, such is the high standard of skill and hard work that has gone into every piece of art submitted for entry.

Our overall winner will receive £400 in prize money, a specially-crafted trophy, an art masterclass from the University of South Wales, and will see their work - along with other shortlisted entries - put on show in a special exhibition at the Project Space in Newport.

We’d like to say a big well done to everyone who has entered.

You should be proud of yourselves.
