NEARLY 60 youngsters took part in a festive parkrun in Newport, complete with fancy dress costumes.

Taking part in the event were 59 runners, of whom three were first timers and 14 recorded new Personal Bests in the 2k run held yesterday at Tredegar House.

It was the 38th event for the group which was held alongside Newport Social Cycling who also joined in by dressing up alongside representatives from six different athletics clubs.

For the boys, Cameron Dury of Rhymney Valley AC was first over the line in seven minutes, 44 seconds - first time in five appearances.

Owen Evans of Newport Harriers AC, was second over the line in seven minutes, 57 seconds, and Emyr Thomas of Newport Harriers AC, was third over the line in eight minutes, five seconds.

For the girls, Seren Jones was first (11th overall) over the line in nine minutes, 47 seconds - second time in 19 appearances.

Lacey Hancock was second (12th overall) over the line in ten minutes, eleven seconds, and Charlotte Chipper of Lliswerry Runners, was third (15th overall) over the line in ten minutes, 23 seconds.

Newport Juniors parkrun started on March 30 this year and since then 685 different runners, including participants from 17 athletics clubs, have completed 3,406 runs covering a total distance of 6,812 km. There have been 759 new personal bests.

The women's record is held by Mollie Samuel who ran in a time of eight minutes and five secconds on March 30. The the men's record is held by Sam Griffiths who ran in a time of six minutes and 50 seconds on the same date.
