NEWPORT businesses got into the festive spirit again this year as they competed for the best shop window this Christmas.

Sponsored and judged by the Newport Chamber of Trade along with Mayor Matthew Evans and Michael Hine centre manager of the Kingsway Centre, shops and businesses in Newport were asked to dress up their windows for Christmas.

Judging took place on December 11 with a presentation ceremony on December 18 at the Mayor’s Parlour.

The winner of the best retail shop owner was ‘Friends of St Anne’s Hospice’ shop on Commercial Street, with ‘What a Party’ also on Commercial Street receiving Highly Commended award.

Best commercial premise was ‘Scissorhands Of Newport’ on Chepstow Road, with highly commended award going to ‘The Lamb’ pub on Bridge Street.

The Mayor’s award went to ‘A.B Florists’ with ‘St David’s Hospice Care’ receiving highly commended award.

The best market stall went to ‘Rachel’s Curry Kitchen’ and ‘Yezen Cafe’ received the highly commended award.

The special award went to the Kingsway Shopping Centre's Santa’s Grotto and the Mayor’s special award went to the Christmas Grotto sat 224 Risca Road.

Eve Williams of the Newport Chamber of Trade said: “We were pleased that the standard was very high this year and we had more entries than last year.”
