THE mother of a Blackwood man stuck in a notorious Indonesian jail after his visa expired has told the Argus that the prosecution in his case is re-appealing in the hope of extending his jail term.

Mathew Davies, from Cefn Fforest, has been locked up in Cipinang Penitentiary Institution in the country’s capital Jakarta for four months for visa irregularities. He has since been told that he will be allowed to leave the prison on February 15 after it is understood he received a six-month sentence.

But mum Yvonne said he is now facing a sentence of two years’ imprisonment because the prosecuting lawyer wants him to have “two or three years for what he has done”.

Ms Davies, who has been contacting her son through Facebook Messenger and mutual friends, said: “I reckon it’s disgusting what they’re doing. It can take up to six months to re-appeal and he has to stay in Jakarta until then with no money.

“They’re not going to let him work out there so I don’t see how he’s going to make any money.”

She said fundraising efforts back home are still continuing as they try to help her son out financially.

“He spent Christmas there and everything,” Ms Davies added. “To be honest, I haven’t enjoyed my Christmas at all. I’m not doing too good.”

Mr Davies had travelled to Indonesia to start a job with a computer firm and worked later at a restaurant.

His mother, 52, has previously said that his working visa must have run out and he had no money on him when the authorities locked him up.

The high-security prison is well-known for in-house crime and drug problems.
