A BATTLE-HARDENED Pontypool soldier from the Welsh Guards took on the worst the British winter could throw at him at the weekend when he competed in the RAF Ardura in Bagshot, Surrey.

Sgt Paul Simons, 27, is part of the British Army’s first Infantry Enduro bike team and was competing over a tough nine-mile loop through the dense Surrey woods.

He battled fallen trees, ravines, obstacles and knee-deep mud in raw conditions for a relentless three hours.

Sgt Simons has an incredible 20 years of Enduro experience.

The winner is the one who completes the most laps of the course in the time.

The Welsh Guardsman was racing against 150 military riders but ended the day in the top five of his class.

His next competition is the British Enduro Championships on March 14, when civilian teams will compete too.
