A GROUP of rugby enthusiasts from Gwent are hoping to raise £500 for the Velindre Cancer Centre when Wales take on Scotland at Murrayfield on February 15.

The 45 fans will be holding dozens of giant inflatable daffodils during the Six Nations match. Some of the daffodils will inflate by up to 10 feet.

The fans will be spread across five rows in block N3 behind the posts. The hope is that because they will be sitting in view of the television cameras, the spectacle will be beamed across Europe.

Awaiting permission from the BBC, the group also hope to display signs showing how viewers can donate, by texting DAFF88£1 to 70070.

The Velindre Cancer Centre, based in Cardiff, provides support for more than 1.5 million people across south east Wales.

Organiser Keith Thomas, 49, from Newport, said: “We’re a group of rugby friends who used to play together or were friends from school.

"It’s a silly idea that’s just grown, literally.

“It just exploded from 12 people in a mini bus a year ago to a coach load of 45."

He added: “My wife, Tracey, and best mate, Gary, are both cancer survivors and Velindre saved their lives.

“In South Wales, I don’t think you could come across a person who does not know someone who has been treated there.”

On the eve of the match, the group will also be raising money for the hospital by busking outside Milnes Bar at Hanover Street in Edinburgh from 1pm.
