ST MARY’S Catholic Primary School is celebrating after a glowing Estyn report.

In its report, Estyn rated the 385-pupil Newport school’s performance as good with prospects for improvement also said to be good.

The school sent a letter home to parents congratulating everyone on working together to achieve the result.

Head teacher Natalie Gould wrote: “The governors are exceedingly pleased to share that it is recognised that all elements of our school are at least ‘good’ and many are ‘excellent’ with many significant strengths identified in the report.”

“Pupils, staff, governors, parents and leadership at our school were all commended within the report for the excellent contributions they make to our school that we are all so proud to be members of.”

Inspectors said that teaching was good and teachers made sure that pupils understood the aims of lessons and give clear explanations of tasks and activities.

Estyn also said that the head teacher provided excellent leadership and had a clear vision for the school that includes empowering all staff and pupils

The report said children showed “exemplary behaviour’ and a positive attitude to learning and said the opportunities children had to influence school life and express their opinions were “outstanding”.

Lindsay Whittle, Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales East, said: “It was great to read such a positive report with good progress being made by most pupils as they go through school.

“I’ve written to the school to congratulate them on the report. I was pleased to read that the school is a caring, inclusive and happy community and that pupils, including those with English as a second language, make good progress.”
