TORFAEN AM Lynne Neagle is calling for action over claims that 70 jobs are set to be lost in Blaenavon.

There were reports that the positions will go at ITW Foils in Blaenavon today.

The Argus contacted the factory, but it said it would not be releasing a statement until tomorrow.

Ms Neagle said she was "deeply saddened” to hear of the job threat at the Blaenavon manufacturer.

The greeting card manufacturer is said to be looking at closing its factory at Kays and Kears Industrial Estate, and is currently consulting with its workforce.

The AM said called them a significant employer for the area.

“I was obviously deeply saddened to hear of the threat to ITW Foils in Blaenavon, given they are such an important employer in the area," she said. "Over the day I’ve liaised with representatives of the company, trade union colleagues, Torfaen council, and local elected representatives."

She also said she had spoken with business minister Edwina Hart, who Ms Neagle said had instructed her officials to visit the company.

"I will of course do everything I can to try and secure these really important local jobs as well ensuring the workers affected get all the support they need at what must be an incredibly difficult time," Ms Neagle added.
