THE results of a new colour coded rating system for Wales’ schools will be revealed later today.

The new model was first unveiled by education Huw Lewis last September and replaces a banding system. Schools will now be rated as either red if they are at the bottom rising up through amber, yellow and green if they are at the top.

When they announced the change, Welsh Government officials said the change was an “evolution” of the method of rating secondary schools into bands from 1 to 5.

But teaching unions have cast doubt on the plan.

When it was announced last year, the NASUWT’s general secretary, Chris Keates, said she “seriously” questioned the investment associated with the new system. It plots performance data against schools’ self-evaluation.

The schools’ colour category will determine how much help they get from regional consortia and councils to improve.

Gwent’s schools standards body, the Education Achievement Service (EAS) already colour codes its schools based on the level of help they need to improve.
