POLICE have arrested a man on suspicion of death by careless driving following a fatal crash on the A449.

A 44-year-old pedestrian from Tredegar died following a collision involving a white Mercedes Sprinter van some time before 5.40am.

A 41-year-old man from Monmouth has been arrested and is currently in custody, police said.

The northbound carriageway of the A449 has re-opened but the southbound stretch remains shut while police carry out an investigation.

A police spokesman said: “The collision was reported to us at 5.39 am.  It involved a white Mercedes Sprinter van and a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a 44-year-old man from Tredegar, sadly died at the scene.

“A 41 year old man from Monmouth has been arrested on suspicious of death by careless driving and is currently in police custody.”

THE A449 near Raglan is closed in both directions following a fatal crash this morning.

A male pedestrian died at the scene of the collision thought to have involved a vehicle.

The accident happened on the southbound carriageway near the Raglan turnoff at around 5.40am.

The vehicle stopped at the scene of the accident, Gwent Police said.

Officers have not made any arrests and are conducting door to door inquiries.

The name of the pedestrian has not been released and police are in the process of contacting relatives.

Chief Insp Mick Moyles said: “The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We are keen for any witnesses to come forward in these tragic circumstances.”
