A SPONTANEOUS protest took place in Newport City Centre yesterday by 'anti-fascist groups', it was said, following reports of a planned far-right rally.

The protest, which took place in Bridge Street at 2pm, followed a peace and unity march organised by religious leaders in the city from the Jamie Mosque in Commercial Street to Westgate Square.

The Welsh Alliance had told Gwent Police they planned a demonstration – but the far-right splinter group of the English Defence League did not appear to have turned up.

Gwent Police Newport Superintendant Glyn Fernquest said officers were present at the "spontaneous gathering" and dispersed the protesters quickly.

He added: "No offences were committed and no arrests made.

“Thank you to the individuals involved and the people who visited the city centre for your cooperation.”

Will Pannell, manager at The Lamb pub in Bridge Street, said anti-fascist protesters gathered outside the pub ahead of the Newport County game against Shrewsbury.

He said there appeared to be two groups clashing but praised the police for their handling of the protesters.

He said: "The police did really well, they behaved really professionally and dealt with the situation really well.

"Everyone was fine, the Shrewsbury fans were great. I've got a lot of respect for the police.

"They were pushing the anti-fascist protesters back and they blocked off the road with vans and cars."
