NEWPORT Museum and Art Gallery wants to hear from members of the public whose Newport relatives were part of the war effort during the First World War.

The museum has been holding an exhibition on the First World War and Newport since August 4.

The exhibition, which is made up of several display cases and panels that tell the stories of those from Newport who were based at home and abroad during the conflict, has been well received by the public.

The museum’s community engagement officer, Steffan Ellis, said: “Although we can’t quite say exactly how many extra numbers there have been in the museum, the reaction has been very positive from the public.

“Now, we’re asking Newport people to pass on the details of their relations' acts of heroism or the terrible conditions they encountered.

“They might have been left without a husband and breadwinner, or they might have stories on the home front on how factories changed everything.”

Among the items displayed include a painting by Fred Roe called May the 8th, which depicts the battle of Frezenberg Ridge just south of Belgian town Ypres in 1915. Around 160 members who served with the 1st Battalion of the Monmouthshire Regiment were killed in this battle.

One of the featured case studies is that of Percy Scannell, a Newport soldier who served in the 2nd Battalion of the Monmouthshire Regiment and died at the age of 20 at the third battle of Ypres in 1917.

Richard Frame, a Newport historian who gave a talk on Mr Scannell at the museum last week, said:

“He was a pioneer in the trenches and had been wounded while he was building, refining, and fixing.

"His condition was too bad to be moved along the line and had to be brought to the advanced dressing station.

“Stories like this are very personal and reading some of his letters, he was just an ordinary lad from Newport.

“Overall, the museum has done a great job in focusing on the people of Newport and the war.”
