YESTERDAY’S City of Newport half-marathon was an outstanding success.

Organised by city charity St David’s Hospice Care and sponsored by insurance firm Admiral, this year’s event was the best yet - and bodes well for years to come.

Almost 2,000 runners pounded the streets of Newport and Caerleon yesterday, backed by cheering crowds and a small army of volunteers providing refreshment along the 13.1-mile route.

One of the big differences between yesterday’s event and previous years - aside from more than 500 additional runners taking part - was that the race started in the city centre and took competitors on a route that included many of Newport’s landmarks.

Authorities like the city council and the police supported the half-marathon far more than in previous years - closing roads temporarily to ensure the route was far more attractive than had been the case.

Such cooperation is vital for the future of the half-marathon, ensuring it becomes a ‘must-run’ event for those who tour the nation taking part in such races.

St David’s hope Newport’s half-marathon will eventually become an event that attracts 10,000 runners - putting both the charity and the city firmly on the map.

Congratulations to everyone who took part yesterday - and also to organisers and volunteers who produced an event of which we should be well and truly proud.
