A BABY who was allegedly murdered was suffering from seizures and paralysis and could not breath on her own when her parents had to make the heartbreaking decision to turn off her life support, a court heard.

Amelia Rose Jones died aged 41 days old on November 12, 2012 after suffering a "catastrophic brain injury".

Her grandfather Mark Jones, aged 45, is on trial for her murder at Newport Crown Court. He denies the charge.

Dr Catherine Fardy's evidence, read aloud in court by prosecutor James Wilson, said that Amelia's parents were told at the University Hospital of Wales that she had suffered a "significant brain injury and would not recover" two days after she had been rushed to hospital struggling to breathe.

Dr Fardy added: "Our focus had to be in ensuring Amelia's comfort and not prolonging her suffering."

The court heard the on-call paediatrician Rachel Bebb was called to the Royal Gwent Hospital on November 17, 2012 to reports of a baby in cardiac arrest.

Amelia had been taken to the Royal Gwent hospital by ambulance staff.

The doctor said she examined Amelia and could not see any injuries or bruises.

Dr Bebb said Amelia's mum Sarah Jones told her that her father Mark Jones, of no fixed abode, was looking after Amelia and went into the kitchen to make a hot drink but came back out to find her not breathing.

Dr Bebb said she first saw Amelia at the hospital on November 8, 2012 when she was admitted with bronchiolitis, a chest infection, and that she had remained in hospital until November 11, 2012.

The court also heard from GP Dr Andrew Lohfink who confirmed he had diagnosed Amelia with a virus on November 7, 2012, a day before she was taken to hospital with bronchiolitis.

Reading from a patient record, Dr Lohfink also confirmed mum Sarah had been prescribed with anti-depressants on October 25, 2012 but said a low mood was common in new mums.

Health visitor Rhian Appleby said she visited the family home twice but said neither visit gave her any cause for concern.

Her first visit was on October 30, 2012 and Amelia's full examination was "totally normal".

Her second visit was on November 14, 2012 after Amelia had been discharged from hospital.

She said she again saw no problem but told Sarah that it was common for a cough to linger for a number of weeks after a chest infection and vomiting was probably caused by the antibiotics Amelia was taking.
