PUPILS at a school in Caerphilly county borough donned wacky costumes last week in support of our 125th anniversary appeal.

The appeal to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the South Wales Argus aims to raise funds for St David’s Hospice Care and will run throughout this year.

On Friday, Risca Community Comprehensive School backed our appeal with a dress down day.

They encouraged pupils to donate £1 each and wear onesies or costumes.Easter-themed prizes were also awarded to pupils for the best costumes by school leaders and the total raised for the hospice charity is still being counted.

Head teacher, John Kendall, said: “We’re delighted to be raising funds for St David’s Hospice with a non-uniform wear-a-onesie day.

“The Argus is celebrating their 125th anniversary this year and this is their chosen charity.

“We are also celebrating a birthday- in our case our 40th- and have lots planned for this special year.”

He added: “One of our projects is a story competition, and earlier this year I asked the editor of the paper, Nicole Garnon, to be a judge.

“She kindly agreed and when she mentioned that they also had an anniversary and were fundraising, we were only too happy to contribute to such an excellent cause.”

St David’s Hospice was founded in 1979 and has grown to become the UK’s largest provider of hospice at home care.

It now cares for more than 3,200 patients and families every year, at a cost of more than £7.5 million.
