Driver lied to get insurance

10:44am Saturday 17th March 2007

AN ABERTILLERY motorist lied when he made an application on line for motor insurance, Cardiff crown court has heard.

Thomas Young, 27, claimed he had no previous convictions but he had been convicted of driving while disqualified and without insurance, said prosecutor Chris Lewis.

Young of Mount Pleasant, Brynithel, Abertillery, admitted obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception.

He was sentenced to a community order involving six months supervision and 100 hours unpaid work for the community.

Mr Justice Butterfield told him "You understood clearly that what you were doing was wrong."

Mr Lewis said that last September he contacted Admiral Insurance and was given a quote of £1,247 for motor insurance.

On the proposal form he indicated he had no motoring convictions within the last five years but this was untrue.

His counsel, Leighton Hughes, said "He is a very foolish young man who has put himself in a perilous position. He fell into temptation thinking he could get away with it.

"What he needs is someone to keep an eye on him."
