TWO Gwent brothers are set to recreate the historic 1839 Chartist March from the Heads of the Valleys into Newport later this year.

Marc Benger, from Wattsville, and brother Christopher are doing the walk to raise money for South Wales charity St David's Foundation Hospice Care.

The pair, joined by friends and anyone willing to also take the challenge, have set a fundraising target of £1,000 for the 20 mile walk which they will be undertaking on Wednesday, November 4.

The two brothers will be starting at the War Memorial Park in Rhymney before heading through New Tredegar passing through Aberbargoed, Blackwood, Abercarn, Crosskeys, Risca and Rogerstone.

The route totals 21.3 miles and takes approximately seven hours. With scheduled pit stops on route for food and drink, the two men are expecting the walk to take nearer nine hours.

The Newport Rising was the last large-scale armed rebellion against the authority in Great Britain when, on November 4,1839, somewhere between 1,000 and 5,000 Chartist sympathisers, led by John Frost, marched on the town of Newport.
