AN inquest into the death of a pedestrian who was killed following a collision with a car in Tredegar was opened and adjourned today.

John Ernest Roach, aged 76, of Glyn Terrace in Tredegar, died after a collision with a Mazda on the Promenade on Tuesday, April 14.

The inquest at Gwent Coroner's office, sitting in Newport, heard how the emergency services were called to King David Tyres last week to a call that a pedestrian had been involved with a collision with a vehicle.

A post mortem examination, carried out by consultant pathologist Dr Andrew Davison at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, revealed Mr Roach died as a result of a blunt head injury and had suffered a skull fracture and acute subdural haemorrhage.

A 54-year-old local man has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

David Bowen, chief coroner for Gwent, adjourned the inquest for a period of three months in order for police investigations to be carried out.

Mr Bowen said Mr Roach’s body would be released to his family for funeral purposes.
