A 39-YEAR-OLD Newport man has been given a two year community order for drug offences.

Ian Smith, of Chelmer Walk, Newport, pleaded guilty to two charges of producing a class B drug and possession of a class A drug.

He appeared in Cardiff Crown Court yesterday morning and was given a two year community order by Judge Patrick Curran.

The court heard how Smith grew a cannabis plant at his house as well as purchasing heroin from Maindee, Newport, which he would then divide up into pouches to “control his use”.

In mitigation, the defence said Smith has “unresolved emotional difficulties for which he needs counselling”.

Judge Curran told Smith he would have to take a part in a participatory building skills recovery programme.
