Last week, we featured a picture of the Three Horseshoes pub, in Malpas, Newport

MALPAS is on the north side of Newport town centre and contains a variety of houses from the 19th century. The oldest houses are in the industrial area near the town centre and the River Usk on flat land called Crindau.

There is history behind many of the buildings, such as the St Mary’s Church, in Maplas which was constructed in 1850 in a neo-Norman style and Malpas Court, a stone mansion, that was built for Thomas Prothero between 1835 and 1838.

Furthermore, The Three Horseshoes pub, during the Second World War, it had soldiers stationed nearby who which would visit and drink at the pub.

This is the Three Horseshoes pub, on Pillmawr Road in Malpas. Pillmawr Road was once the only road from Malpas to Caerleon and always known as the Roman Road.

At one time, Malpas was a very rural parish on the outskirts of Newport, containing only handful of houses and farm buildings. Malpas started to expand in the 1930s with the building of the Graig Park Estate, followed by another big Malpas estate and in the 1960s and 70s, the Woodlands, Malpas Park, Pilton Vale and Claremont.

Behind the cameraman’s back is Malpas Library housed in what was the Malpas Church in Wales Primary School building.

Looks like the Three Horse Shoes Pillmawr Rd, Malpas. Many a afternoon or evening spent with friends. Has changed a bit over the years though.

This is the Three Horseshoes Pub on Pillmawr Road. It is sort of on an island there, with the road in front dividing left to Malpas Road and right downhill to Grove Park and the houses. A good pub at one time, Ansell’s I think in the 1960s.

I think this may be the Victoria inn on Nash road if that is the case people shown are my parents and brother.
