THE MIKRON Theatre Company will mark 100 years of the Women’s Institute in Britain with a new show, to be performed in Birkenshaw next month.

Raising Agents, written by Maeve Larkin, focusses on Bunnington WI – a branch described as “a bit down-at-heel”, with dwindling membership meaning it can barely afford its hall, let alone a decent speaker. So, when a PR guru becomes a member, the women are initially glad of the new blood.

However, the milk of WI kindness begins to sour when she re-brands the group the Bunnington Bunnies, and with “stakes higher than a five-tiered cake-stand”, a battle ensues for the very soul of the Bunnington WI.

Mikron, based in Marsden in Kirklees, is performing the show as part of its 44th national tour, in which it will travel around the country by inland waterways on its vintage narrowboat, Tyseley.

The Birkenshaw performance, hosted by Gomersal WI, will take place at the BBG Academy, on Bradford Road, from 1pm on Saturday, May 9.

There is no need to buy a ticket for the show, as a collection will be taken by the company after the performance.
