Ahead of British Sandwich Week, we look at what makes a good lunchtime treat.

CARYS THOMAS talks to staff at Newport’s Parc Pantry to find out more and to see what the favourite sandwich options are in Gwent.

WITH British Sandwich week taking place this week we've looked at what the most popular sandwiches in Gwent.

Whether its cucumber, tuna or egg – everyone has a favourite lunchtime snack and British Sandwich Week which runs from May 10 to 16 aims to celebrate all there is about sandwiches.

Among those joining in is Newport's Parc Pantry cafe and deli, based in Larch Grove in Malpas, which has been open since September and wants to bring new eating experiences to Newport.

Ant Cook and Matt Ellis, are co-owners of the deli and also have a sandwich delivery service which delivers to businesses around Newport.

They say a popular sandwich for their customers is the Reuben. It is one of their signature sandwiches which is made up of deli style beef with emmental cheese, French mustard, gherkins and thousand island dressing.

Mr Cook said: "We sell a decent number of Reuben. The favourites are the British classics such as the ham and cheese sandwich.

"Generally the New York type of sandwiches do quite well. Everywhere you go you get a variation of the sandwich and everyone tweaks it to their clientele."

Mr Cook said another popular sandwich is chicken and bacon. He said they aim to give each of the classics something different to make it more unique.

Parc Pantry has a chicken and bacon twist which consists of chicken breast with grilled bacon in a mayo dressing topped with parmesan, basil and pepper.

Mr Cook said: "A lot of sandwich shops tend to add a little pepper - I know Marks and Spencer's chicken and bacon sandwich has proved popular."

He said they create the menu a week in advance and are adding new sandwiches, drinks and cakes weekly.

He said: "We try to bring something new to our customers every week. For the summer the heavier items don't do so well so things such as chicken filled wraps will be on the menu. If it’s a rainy day people want something a bit more comforting."

He added: "We bring new items in weekly - we try to do it even more often, sometimes every three days there is a new item for customers to try something different."

For national coffee week, Parc Pantry also introduced a new flavour mocha using Snickers chocolate bars.

Mr Cook said: "There are so many different options for different street food in London, we want to bring different options to the people of Newport. We have started Friday evening bringing in different street foods."

Samantha Watkins, 38, owner of Taste Buds on Upper Dock Street in Newport, said the most popular sandwich for them is the ham and cheese with curried peach chutney.

She said: "We sell a lot of jacket potatoes but I would probably say the ham and cheese with curried peach chutney was the most popular. I don't know of anywhere else which puts in that type of chutney in.

"We get it from Vin Sullivan in Abergavenny. We've had the sandwich since we opened - I think it's quite popular as it’s a little different."

She added: "People generally do tend to stick to the same thing."

She said other popular sandwiches were chicken tikka along with tuna and cheese.
