VOLUNTEERS in Monmouthshire helped clean Sudbrook Foreshore as part of clean cost week.

More than 20 volunteers from Monmouthshire council and staff from McDonald's participated in a clean up of the coastline on Thursday in aid of Keep Wales Tidy's Clean Coast Week. The third annual clean coast week, sponsored by McDonald’s Restaurants Ltd, coincides with Clean Europe Week which aims to reduce litter and promote responsible behaviour across Europe.

At the event, which is one of over 100 that took place in Wales as part of clean coast week, 25 bags of litter were collected, as well as half a tonne of loose items from Sudbrook Foreshore.

Nick Ramsay, assembly member for Monmouth, said: “I am delighted to be supporting Clean Coast Week. Too often we take our beautiful Welsh coastline for granted.

"It is important we all recognise it as ‘our’ coastline and we must all take responsibility for looking after it."

Lesley Jones, Keep Wales Tidy chief executive, said: “We are lucky to have such beautiful coastline in Wales as it helps to boost local economies and the tourism industry but we mustn’t take it for granted. It’s important that local businesses and communities-alike make a joint effort to help care for our coastline and maintain the high standard of our coast that attracts so many visits each year."
