A NEWPORT man drowned after jumping into the River Usk in Newport, an inquest heard.

Gwent Coroner’s Court, sitting in Newport earlier today, heard how Brian Ernest Brewster, 77, suffered from depression after receiving treatment for suspected bowel cancer.

His body was recovered by rescue boats from the river near the St Julians Inn at around 9pm on July 29, last year.

Witnesses said they saw a man jump off the bridge near Sainsbury’s in Newport.

David Bowen, Gwent chief coroner, said Mr Brewster died as a result of drowning and a post-mortem examination confirmed he had bowel cancer.

Verdict: killed himself while depressed.
