RESIDENTS at Mill Heath Nursing Home in Newport were treated to a very special 50s and 60s themed party to mark Dementia Awareness Week last week.

As well as dressing in outfits reminiscent of the period, the party included music, decorations and food to help spark nostalgic memories for residents, their friends and families.

The party is one of many being held across the country as part of Dementia Awareness Week supported by leading food provider, apetito, which makes finger food options ideal for people with dementia.

Ellen Brown, divisional manager for care homes at apetito said: “The 1950s style parties during Dementia Awareness Week are a chance for care homes and residents to have fun, while emphasising the importance of social interaction for those with dementia.

“We see the harsh reality of dementia on a daily basis and our work throughout the year as advocates of good quality care for people living with the condition – including the importance of good nutrition in supporting their health and wellbeing – is a big focus of what we do.”
