A CAERLEON scout group is holding an open afternoon on Saturday after they received more than £5,000 in grants to refurbish their scout hut.

The hut, on Cold Bath Road, Caerleon, was in much need of repairs but thanks to the work of scouts, cubs, parents, leaders and the new committee, it has now undergone a renovation.

Caerleon Scouts received a £5,000 National Lottery Grant which paid for new vinyl and carpet flooring inside the hut, replace the old doors and stone the outside area.

The hut also received £300 of free National Garden gift vouchers thanks to a campaign run by Keep Wales Tidy and funded by the Welsh Government’s Nature Fund. Newport City Homes also donated a fee which went towards a new kitchen.

The scouts themselves have given up their free time and busy helping to renovate the hut with the support of local businesses. Homebase supplied the paint and Wickes of Newport provided paint and resources which meant the team could decorate the whole inside.

Club Treasurer Lisa Sykes called the whole project an "exciting time" and invited the local community to the fun day on Saturday, May 23, at the Scout Hut from 1pm to 4pm. There will be a BBQ, bouncy castle, face painting, tent building, giant jenga and more.

She thanked local councillor Cliff Suller who supported the committee. She said: “He has been absolutely brilliant”.
