NEIGHBOURS tried to save the life of a motorcyclist by performing CPR after a collision in Nantyglo.

The collision took place on Friday at around 6.05pm and involved a motorbike and a car on Chapel Road. A 43-year-old man, who was riding the motorbike, died as a result of injuries he sustained during the collision.

The motorist, a 19-year-old man from the Cardiff area was uninjured. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Neighbours say they rushed to help after the collision with two people performing CPR on the motorcyclist. Lee Thomas, who is trained in first aid and nurse David Flower, 57, both of Chapel Road, tried to help save the motorcyclist.

Elizabeth Flower, 82, said her son David was one of the residents who helped with CPR.

She said: "We were in the house when it happened. David's bedroom overlooks the road.

"He heard it and raced downstairs. He helped with CPR with others."

Mrs Flower said her son has worked as a nurse for 9 years and previously worked at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny.

A woman neighbour who did not want to be named said: "They all did an amazing job. There was a local fireman who stopped to help."

Ralph Curtis, 72, a resident of Chapel Road, said: "I heard a bump and looked to see what it was. There were a couple of people helping. I think there were three people working on the man.

“They were working very hard before the ambulance arrived."

Residents say an air ambulance landed on the green next to the where the collision took place.

Tony Byrne, 34, from Ebbw Vale, who was working outside a property on Chapel Road, said: "I caught a glimpse in the corner of my eye of the accident. A couple of neighbours ran down there to help.

"The man from up the road was doing CPR before the ambulance arrived. There were about six people who went to help.”

He added: "Everyone was doing their best."

Gwent Police is now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to ring 101 quoting log 401 22/05/15.
