FOLLOWING nearly four years of battling leukaemia, a Torfaen teenager is in remission – now his mother is planning to face her fears by taking part in a record-breaking skydive.

Jordan Chandler was diagnosed with Leukaemia in August 2011, at the age of 14.

In February, Three and a half years later he was given the good news that he is in remission, and Jordan's bravery inspired his mum, Donna Freebury, to take part in a skydive.

Mrs Freebury, 33, explained that after his diagnosis it turned into “a nightmare,” with Jordan being rushed to hospital as he not only fought the disease, but also developed E.coli and fungal growths on his lungs.

He remained in the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for three months, where he received intense chemotherapy, and since then he has been back and forth for treatment.

Mrs Freebury, who lives in Griffithstown with Jordan, her husband Rob, and son William, said: “He was told he was in remission in February and I thought I want to raise money for The Teenage Cancer Trust as they have been brilliant and I came across the skydive in memory of Stephen Sutton so I signed up.”

Fundraiser Stephen Sutton MBE set his heart on breaking the record for the most number of tandem skydives in one day. Unfortunately he died before he was able to make it a reality.

Inspired by Stephen, Teenage Cancer Trust has organised the world-record-breaking skydiving event for July 10 – with 350 people taking the jump at 10,000 feet.

“When I think about it, it does frighten me, but I want to raise money for the charity and Jordan does think I am crazy, but he is proud of me,” Mrs Freebury explained.

At the time of diagnosis, Jordan was a pupil at Croesyceiliog Comprehensive pupil and missed all of year 10 and most of year 11. But he was determined to not let his education suffer, and completed some exams.

He is now studying music at This enabled him to apply for Crosskeys College where he is now studying music where he plays the drums and has dreams of performing with an orchestra.

“He has coped with it amazingly well and has been really determined not to let it hold him back in life,” she added.
