A 24-HOUR gym will open in Newport next month near the station on Cambrian Road, creating up to 14 new jobs for managers and personal trainers.

The Gym Group has posted a timer on its website counting down the hours and days until the new branch opens on June 10.

Bosses say it is good news for the local economy as there will be job openings for 12 personal trainers, as well as other staff.

Based in the Cambrian Centre at Station Quarter, it will be handy for employees at Admiral’s new offices.

The Newport gym will be the latest in 62 "budget" gyms throughout the UK, open throughout the night and marketed as cheaper than others with no commitment to an annual contract.

General manager Simon Pope said: “Having grown up in Magor, on the outskirts of Newport, I’m really excited about supporting people from the local community overcome barriers to fitness and helping them reach their fitness goals.

"We offer flexible membership terms that allow members to come and go as they please.

“We’ll be offering a range of fantastic classes, designed to suit all abilities – and it’s all included in the low monthly price. We want to attract a whole new group of local people to The Gym. For example, those on low incomes, students, retired people and shift workers as well those who value the 24 hour opening and flexible membership terms.”

John Treharne, CEO of The Gym Group, said: “At The Gym there are no contracts to tie you in because we know that people need flexibility to accommodate other changes in their lives and to come and go from their gym as and when they want.”

The new gym will also be open for viewing from May 30 for people to look around ahead of the official opening on 10 June.
